IPv4 ran out of room years ago. Most networks have kept going by stacking on workarounds: NAT, shared address space, and address plans that have been patched so many times the diagram doesn't match reality anymore. For an operator adding devices every year, sensors, meters, cameras, endpoints, the pressure only builds. At some point the workarounds cost more to maintain than the move to IPv6 would.
Before getting into the how, two things are worth clearing up, because they trip up a lot of transition planning.
The first is the idea that IPv6 is just more addresses. It is that, but the bigger win is the chance to design an address plan cleanly, after two decades of accretion. A well-structured IPv6 plan makes segmentation easier, which matters a great deal if you're trying to keep parts of your network walled off from each other.
The second is the belief that IPv6 comes with encryption built in. It doesn't encrypt your traffic for you. What it offers is consistent support for IPsec and a cleaner structure that's easier to secure and segment. The security benefit is real, but it comes from how you design and manage the network, not from flipping IPv6 on.
Then there's the part that catches teams off guard. When you enable IPv6, you've created a second network running alongside your IPv4 one, often a dual-stack period that lasts months. If your firewalls, monitoring, and logging aren't watching the v6 side with the same care as the v4 side, you've opened an attack surface you're not watching. We've seen environments where IPv6 was technically live for a year before anyone confirmed the security tooling could even see it. That's the gap to plan around from day one.
A sound transition handles three things in order: get your address allocation and design the plan, roll out dual-stack in phases with testing at each step, and confirm your security stack covers IPv6 before you lean on it. None of it has to disrupt operations if it's sequenced right.
